Glenn Beck Has A Dream Too!
Most of you are by now aware that Fox News’ Glenn Beck plans to lead a rally which he calls “Restoring Honor” on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on the 47th anniversary of The march on Washington and at the place where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his landmark “I Have a Dream” speech. To what end? Well, Lynnrockets’ Blast-Off has found a terrific blog post which seems to put things in perspective. Most of this enlightening post is found below, but please read the whole thing (as well as the other insightful posts) at Nadra’s Race Relations Blog.
“Beck says the purpose of the rally is to celebrate “upstanding citizens who embody our nation’s founding principles of integrity, truth and honor,” New America Media reports. Sounds like an honorable event, right? There’s just one problem, civil rights activists aren’t buying that the rally will be used to raise awareness about the poor and oppressed. Perhaps that’s because the reported aim of the rally is to “take our country back.”
Hmmm…from whom could Beck want to take America back? Could it be President Barack Obama, the man Beck said “has a deep-seated hatred for white people,” ignoring the fact that Obama himself is biracial and grew up mostly with his white grandparents. Beck seemingly only made this suggestion to stir up resentment of the nation’s first black president among the largely white far right. Now civil rights activists fear that he’s exploiting King’s legacy to suggest that people of color are assuming more and more control while conservatives are losing ground. I find this message inaccurate and irresponsible, but if Beck wants to preach it, that’s his right. But why use the symbolism of King to do so?
King was staunchly anti-Vietnam, pro-poor people’s rights and anti-racism. He defied conservatives who wanted blacks to remain the nation’s underclass and ignored moderates who told him to seek change gradually rather than rapidly. Had he lived to see today, Beck, Limbaugh, Palin and the rest surely would have routinely blasted him. That’s why AlterNet writer Devona Walker called Beck’s decision to co-opt King symbolism the Fox News host’s “most vindictive and spiteful move yet.”
Imagine if a bunch of lefties held a rally on Ronald Reagan’s birthday at the library bearing his name in Simi Valley, Calif., to preach about reproductive rights, environmentalism, pacifism and affirmative action. Would conservatives stand for this, or would they accuse the demonstrators of subverting Reagan’s platform? Well, by holding the “Restore America” rally on the anniversary of the March on Washington where King presented “I Have a Dream,” Beck and Co. haven’t only exploited and subverted King’s message, they’ve spat on it.
Earlier I asked who Beck wants to take America back from, but I also wonder to what point in time he wants to restore the country. Is it during a period where the idea of a black president was unthinkable, when few parts of King’s dream had been realized? I get the feeling that what Beck’s aiming for here isn’t restoration but regression.”

(sung to the Michael Jackson song “Ben”)
Glenn, you’d like to start a holy war
But you are just a small mouse that roars
Your intelligence on loan right from the Twilight Zone
And Glenn my friend we see, you’re in the Tea Party
(You’re in the Tea Party)
Glenn, you lost your mind and all your hair
You and Palin make a darling pair
You are both the lying kind, you’ll both be left behind
There’s something you should know, you soon will have no show
(You soon will have no show)
You used to be high and free
Now it’s just Fox TV
(You purposely lie to me)
(You’re vile as pus, honestly)
Glenn, smart people don’t care what you say
(Please go away)
They know your brain cells were fried away
(Please hide away)
You’d fare better on “The View”
Ms. Hasselbeck and you
Could give the right wing spin
To Muslim hating women
